Supports for Students
How to Access Your Book Digitally
Students can access summer reading books digitally in a variety of ways. See the BHS Library blog post on how on accessing ebooks and audiobooks for more information. BHS Teacher Librarian, Ms. Graham, created these step-by-step instructions to help. If you have trouble accessing your book, please email Ms. Graham (cgraham@bpsk12.org).
Audiobooks
Everyone loves having someone read to them. Hearing someone’s voice as they share a story feels personal. It helps us connect to the language and the message and the characters. Listening to books also helps us academically. By exposing us to challenging vocabulary and rich language, providing access to content, and increasing our comprehension ability, audiobooks are excellent supports for everyone. Students who read the words on the page as they listen to the audiobook are taking in information both visually and audibly, which will reinforce their word recognition and help them gain decoding strategies. Students who choose to listen to the book without reading along will strengthen their listening, comprehension, and vocabulary skills.
You can access audiobooks for many of the summer reading titles through the Burlington Public Library’s website.
your local Librarians
Ms. Graham, BHS Teacher Librarian, is a great resource. She worked on the committee that created the summer reading list and will be very helpful in your selection process. Feel free to email her (cgraham@bpsk12.org) if have any questions about the summer reading book options or if you want help finding something to read that’s not on the list.
Jenna Cantino, BPL YA Librarian extraordinaire, loves to talk books with students. She wants students to know that the Burlington Public Library has a ton of great ebooks you can access while staying safe this summer. She also wants to highlight HOOPLA, a website and app that the Burlington Public Library subscribes to, which provides access to ebooks, audiobooks, music, TV, and more. Ms. Cantino will be available throughout the summer at the BPL to help students access and understand books. Please note that the Burlington Public Library is helping patrons by allowing library card registrations online, so if you don’t have a local library card yet you can get one easily.
Your Teachers
Believe it or not, your teachers read. They are readers. Reach out to some of your teachers to see which books they recommend? Ask them about how they choose books? See what’s on their current reading list. Find out if they belong to any reading groups or clubs? Check in with them during their remote office hours to see what they think about reading.
